Week 5: Sept. 6 - Sept 12 2010

Our first Canada warbler of the season caught at Erie Bluffs!

Christine using the optivisor to take a closer took at the bill of a ruby-throated hummingbird. She is looking for tiny serrations along the bill that would indicate its age as a hatch year.

One of our faithful volunteers Sam Stull making friends with a tufted titmouse at Niagara last Saturday.

Look at the difference in plumage between these cedar waxwings! This is the after hatch year adult bird. Note the beautiful red waxy tips on it's wings, for which it gets it's name. We count and measure these as one of the ways to determine the age of these birds.

This is a hatch year cedar waxwing. Note that there are no red waxy tips present on the wing, as well as the much more drab overall appearance compared to the older bird. Don't worry little fella, when we see you next spring you will have grown in to a beautiful bird!
