1000 birds and counting......

Well, the day after our last posting we had our biggest day of the season - 114 birds at Fry's Landing! 25 species were caught, including our first Mourning Warbler and Northern Parula! It was a ton of fun, and luckily a few trusty volunteers were on hand to help out! Saturday the 16th got winded out (is that a word..lol) so we resumed banding at Erie Bluffs on Monday the 18th. This site continues to be pleasant - lots of Eastern Kingbirds, jays and swallows feeding in the field and red-breasted grosbeaks, catbirds and indigo buntings busy at the edge! We caught a total of 30 birds (11 species) there. We followed this with a visit there on the 21st, and netted another 27 birds representing 17 species! Be sure to check out our photo album for some neat shots comparing second year and after second year male Indigo Buntings. Fry's landing, as usual, produced many netted birds: 65 (15 species) on the 19th and 73 (23 species) on the 22nd. Standouts included our first Blackpolls and Bay-breasted Warblers of the season, gorgeous male Baltimore Orioles, and an Eastern Kingbird. Another shot worth checking out in the album is the kingbird flashing his orange patch at us! Finally, Niagara yielded 60 birds (15 species) on the 20th and 47 (18 species) on the 23rd. We are down to our last week, so check out our final blog next week for a seasonal summary!
